This region certainly does have its history! Now you have relocated to the area, and sorted out your self storage requirements, one mustn't overlook what Cumbria has on its doorstep.
Hadrian, once he became Roman Emperor in 117AD set about making the Empire more secure. He separated the Roman and Barbarian territories. He set about ordering his army to build and define the north-west frontier of his Empire. What a task! He inspected it in AD122 while work was on going. The Wall stretched seventy three miles from Wallsend in the east to the Solway Firth in the west.
The Wall finishes at the Solway Firth but its numerous forts, milecastles and turrets all carried on across the Cumbrian coast to Maryport. There are more forts along the way down to Ravenglass, South Cumbria. Many people travel around to world to walk the sections of the wall.
From Carlisle, it's very easy to take a look at Hadrian's Wall if you're considering a day sight seeing. We are so lucky to have this on our door step! If we travel a short distance from Carlisle to Brampton and travel past Lanercost Priory, we come to part of the Roman Wall known as Banks East Turret. This section of Hadrian's Wall is well kept overlooking superb views.
Further on from Banks is Birdoswald. Birdoswald began when a wooded spur was cleared for construction of Hadrian's Wall back in AD 122. The fort itself was added to the Wall afterwards where an infantry cohort of over 800 men were stationed remaining in occupation during the Roman period. This part of the Roman Wall is also a very well preserved section.
At Birdoswald, there is a café, a museum and plenty of parking.
The Birdoswald Roman Fort is a nice attraction with parking and a cafe. You're able to walk a fair distance along the wall.
Plenty of Walks along the way.
